The lecture will be given by Paul Damm. It is organized by the Groupement des Ingénieurs et Cadres de la DGAC Retraités et en Activité (GIACRE) in association with the 3AF Ile de France group.
Orly airport is inaugurated by General de Gaulle on February 24, 1961. The new glass-and-steel terminal, which spans the Nationale 7 motorway and presents motorists coming from Paris with a 200-metre blue-and-yellow glass façade, is striking for its resolutely modern architecture. The airport immediately became France's most visited landmark, with families flocking to see the planes. Orly's terraces, sung by Bécaud, were part of the decor of 60s France, which aspired to modernity.
A new page in aviation history was turned: Orly welcomed the new jet airliners. Caravelles, Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-8s definitively replaced propeller-driven aircraft, ushering in a new era of speed and mass transport.

Paul Damm is Head of the Memory Mission at the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC). He is a graduate of Sciences Po and head curator of heritage. In his previous job with the Ile de France region, he was involved in research into the history of Orly, which led to the publication of a book by the region in 2020,available from Lieux-dits.
