The eVTOL dream or reality?

The Ile-de-France group of the Association Aéronautique et Astronautique de France (3AF), in partnership with 3AF's " Centre " group and the Groupement des Ingénieurs et Cadres Supérieurs de l'Aviation Civile (GIACRE), is hosting a conference entitled " LES eVTOL : RÊVE OU REALITE ?". The talk is given by Philippe Lagarde, a retired engineer and Aerospace Valley volunteer.

Summary Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have seen unprecedented growth in recent years, as they promise to be emission-free and, above all, quieter than helicopters. They promise to be_CO2 emission-free and, above all, quieter than helicopters - an essential criterion for their main mission, which is to operate in urban areas. Faced with a market expressed in billions, more than two hundred manufacturers, backed by substantial funding, have taken the plunge.In October 2023, for the first time in the world, the CAAC, China's civil aviation authority, issued a type certificate for the Ehang EH216 to operate domestically. On the Western side, many obstacles (technological, regulatory, societal) remain to be overcome before commercial development. The presentation will review the eVTOL solutions made possible today by distributed electric propulsion, as well as the main projects, and will conclude with a review of the current state of play, highlighting the hard points. Dream or reality, will eVTOLs live up to the hopes they have raised?
